Standard D2: The facility has defined procedures for storage, inventory management and dispensing of drugs
The standard includes safe storage of drugs and management of the inventory, so that adequate quantity of drugs and consumables are available in HWC (SC).
Standard also look into processes of indenting, procurement, storage, management of expired drugs, stock
management, proper storage including optimum temperature maintenance in HWC (SC) and dispensing.
ME D2.1: The facility ensures systematic storage, organization, and labeling of drugs and consumables.
(Focuses on storing medicines on racks/shelves, proper labeling, segregation by therapeutic category or alphabetical order, and preventing exposure to direct sunlight, moisture, or dust).
ME D2.2: The facility maintains effective inventory management, stock records, and indenting processes to prevent stock-outs and overstocking.
(Focuses on maintaining updated stock registers/logbooks, reorder levels, indenting procedures through designated portals/supply chains, and First-Expiry-First-Out (FEFO) / First-In-First-Out (FIFO) practices).
ME D2.3: The facility ensures optimal temperature maintenance and cold chain management for heat-sensitive drugs and diagnostic reagents.
(Focuses on maintaining room temperature logs, functional refrigerators/ice-lined refrigerators (ILR) where applicable, and monitoring temperature ranges for vaccines and temperature-sensitive supplies).
ME D2.4: The facility follows safe dispensing practices and provides appropriate counseling on drug administration to patients.
(Focuses on dispensing medicines in clean/proper packaging, clear labeling with dosage and frequency, verifying patient details before dispensing, and instructing patients on compliance and potential side effects).
ME D2.5: The facility has a defined procedure for the management and safe disposal of expired, damaged, or near-expiry drugs.
(Focuses on identifying near-expiry drugs early, segregating expired drugs in a designated, marked area, keeping records of condemnation, and following safe disposal protocols).
