The standard is concerned with Bio-Medical Waste & its management at HWC (SC) and during outreach activities. It includes segregation, transportation, storage and disposal of Bio-Medical Waste.
Availability of equipment and practices of segregation can be directly observed.
Staff should be interviewed about the procedure for management of the needle stick injuries.
Storage and transportation of waste should be observed, and records are verified.
Standard give special emphasis to ensure management of bio-medical & general waste produced in community during outreach activities.
Assessor can observe how final disposal of waste take place from HWC.
ME F5.1: The facility ensures color-coded segregation and proper storage of bio-medical waste at source.
(Focuses on availability and usage of color-coded bins/bags—yellow, red, blue, and translucent/sharp containers—at points of waste generation in accordance with Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules).
ME F5.2: The facility ensures safe collection, handling, and transportation of bio-medical and hazardous waste.
(Focuses on standard procedures for internal transport, secure central storage areas, usage of protective equipment during transport, and maintaining waste collection/disposal logs).
ME F5.3: The facility ensures appropriate treatment and final disposal of bio-medical waste, including waste generated during community outreach activities.
(Focuses on tie-ups with Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTF) or deep burial/sharp pits compliant with norms, along with protocols for handling waste collected during field visits and immunization sessions).
ME F5.4: The facility has a defined protocol for the prevention and management of needle-stick injuries and mercury/chemical spills.
(Focuses on staff awareness, immediate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) protocols, reporting mechanisms, and availability of spill management kits).
