Standard E4: The facility has defined procedure for safe drug administration

  • standard is concerned with safety of drug administration including high alert drugs administration, legibility of medical orders, process for checking drugs and processes related to self-drug administration etc.

  • Patient’s records should be reviewed for legibility, appropriateness and recording of date of orders.

  • Safe injection practices like use of separate needle for multi-dose vial should be observed.

  • ME E4.1: The facility ensures verified and legible medical orders/prescriptions prior to drug administration.

    (Focuses on reviewing patient records for legible prescriptions, drug dosage, route, frequency, date of order, and doctor's sign/stamp).

  • ME E4.2: Facility staff adhere to safe injection practices and infection control protocols during drug administration.

    (Focuses on using sterile single-use syringes/needles, separate needles for multi-dose vials, proper skin antisepsis, and immediate safe disposal of used sharps).

  • ME E4.3: The facility has a defined procedure for safe storage, handling, and administration of high-alert medications and emergency drugs.

    (Focuses on special labeling, segregated storage of high-alert drugs, double-check procedures prior to administration, and emergency drug tray preparedness).

  • ME E4.4: The facility monitors patients after drug administration and manages adverse drug reactions (ADR).

    (Focuses on post-administration observation, patient instruction regarding potential side effects, maintaining an ADR reporting log, and taking immediate corrective action in case of allergic/adverse events).
